Bandra Fort, and the coast's forgotten watchtowers

Where the suburb goes to watch the sun drop into the sea. Inspired by "Bandra Fort" by Sudhagee.

Bandra Fort is where the suburb goes to watch the sun drop into the sea.

01Place in this storyBandra FortCastella de Aguada, a Portuguese-era watchtower on the rocks at Bandra's Land's End, facing the Sea Link.

The Portuguese called it Castella de Aguada — a watchtower over the water. Now it frames the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and the rocks below at Land's End fill with couples and tide pools at golden hour.

02Place in this storyLand's End, BandraThe rocky Bandra promontory of tide pools and sunset benches beside Bandra Fort.03Place in this storyBandra-Worli Sea LinkAn eight-lane cable-stayed bridge across Mahim Bay, best seen lit up from Bandra Fort.

If you develop a taste for these half-forgotten forts, the coast keeps a whole chain of them — Mahim on its bay, Sion on its hill, Sewri above the winter flamingo mudflats.

Every one of Bombay's forts is really just a good place to watch the light.
